Drop Dead

Story, first published: Galaxy Science Fiction, July 1956

"Drop Dead" ... is the bitterly amusing story of an agricultural survey expedition which lands on a planet populated by strange hybrids of animal and vegetable called "critters". Critters are the perfect food; not only do they taste good but they conveniently drop dead at your feet. Initially, the expedition is afraid to eat critters. Then, the survey team runs low on food, and there is nothing to do but eat critter. The consequences recall the injunction to Odysseus's men not to eat the cattle of the god Helios, but in this case, when you eat critter, you become a critter-part of the perfect food chain of "you are what you eat".
